It was there in 1.40 (earliest still on CPAN, 29 May 2003). I seem to remember using it in 2001 or 2002 as well but I'm too lazy to look it up in BackPAN.

    Wow! Looking inside, the copyright goes way back to 1995.

    I guess I just never thought to look for a module that does little more than I can do with nested arrays.
