Why are you contradicting me without any knowledge in the matter? (Questioning me would be different.)

You did not provide data to support your argument or any useful links, so I thought it was an assumption.

One of the issues is that working with the software on which PerlMonks is based involves a lot of round trips to the database. Another involves issues with running MySQL on FreeBSD.

I have no experience at all with FreeBSD (Never used it before), but if it's causing the slowness then why not change it?

I have decided to search about this, and it appears that FreeBSD/MySQL problem is a history now. it appears to be running faster than Linux on FreeBSD 7 Benchmarked here	[reply]

Lisa. They're numbers. They're on the internet. You lose. Yes, quite a while after we had identified a serious problem with our instance of MySQL, "the internet" noticed a problem with MySQL on FreeBSD. The two problems seemed related but not identical. Since then, the internet solved their problem. And pair.com has upgraded FreeBSD and MySQL several times and even tried to build PerlMonks a custom version of MySQL using suggestions from the internet. The custom version of MySQL never worked well enough to even deploy. PerlMonks' problem with MySQL that started when we switched to FreeBSD has not gone away. Actually we have two serious problems with MySQL. Perhaps if I show your benchmarks to our instance of MySQL our problems will go away. - tye	[reply]

OK, and what versions of MySQL and FreeBSD are in use? Oh, you don't know. And you don't know what constraints the admins are working under, and so you don't know whether they can upgrade MySQL (you've already been told they can't change the OS).	[reply]
