Mars Cydonia face to face

Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I want to send out alert emails when "The Face" on Cydonia on Mars is facing Los Angeles California. I have the NASA Mars24 java program to use, downloaded here...

I can do the emails fine but the formula is daunting because sometimes Mars is behind Earth and sometimes in front of Earth making the face a night time event and sometimes a daytime event depending.

Maybe a cool project for a "perl monks approved iPhone or Android App."

So according to Mars24 The Face on Mars will point to Los Angeles at 8pm on 12/23/2011 an early evening event but in six months jun 23 2012 it'll be like 6pm. Seems every six months it goes back two hours of Earth time, time slip don't you know.	[reply]

I got every two years mars falls behing earth 62 days so on sept 22 2011 mars was setting to night and on sept 23 2012 mars rises again as day face then add 62 days nov 25 2014 mars rises as day face two years later BooM! predictable !!!!!!! Yes, It's like moon phases, only on a Martian 668.5991 day year timescale. Why don't you ask JPL for a formula?	[reply]

Wouldn't it need a Logarithm formula? Like the degrees in or out of phase with the Earth prime meridian 0 degrees at any date in the future and L.A. lat. 34 long. -118 Hmmmm	[reply]
