As you can see from my post regarding Pisa, I can understand your interest in knowing the date.

My points are

a) other YAPC::EUs I've checked have not been earlier in announcing the date

b) comparing to YAPC::NA isn't fair.

c) If you had already organized such an event, you would know that minimizing the fixed costs takes time.

If you are still thinking we are doing a bad job, I can't help.

other YAPC::EUs I've checked have not been earlier in announcing the date You were referring to YAPC::EU 2010, which by the time you made your post may not have finalized their dates -- at least it had communicated tentative dates. Dates that were at least already known beginning of December, when I talked to the organizers and they indicated they didn't plan to move the dates. Do also note that last years conference had the dates already mentioned in the proposal, and the dates were announced in Pisa. So, if I compare you to the previous two years, you rank third when it comes to having dates at the end of December. comparing to YAPC::NA isn't fair. My main point was that YAPC::NA has been communicating very well. Surely it isn't easier being in the US to update your blog, your website, or the conferences mailing list? You made a good start the first month after YAPC::EU 2011, with 5 posts. But then nothing for 3 months. If you had already organized such an event, you would know that minimizing the fixed costs takes time. What has that to do with my questions 1) when is the conference?, and 2) why are you invisible? Note that they weren't just silent about the venue or the dates. I haven't found a peep of them for the past three months about anything. I haven't organized any conference, but I have some close friends who did, and I've talked to enough other organizers to know there's more to a conference than just dates and a venue. Surely the contract-to-be with the venue wouldn't prevent the organizers talking about sponsors, accommodations, travel options, partner program, fun things to do in and around Frankfurt, will-there-be-an-auction-or-not, social program, or anything else non-date-or-venue related? I am thankful that my current employer doesn't require me to commit on Jan 1 for all my vacation for the year Neither does my employer. But people have spouses and children, and some start planning their holidays in January (don't forget, YAPC::EU has the tendency to be organized in the middle of the European holiday season). And the half of my team that wants to go to YAPC::EU can't go if the other half has already claimed those weeks to take vacation. There are also people like trainers and consultants who need dates so they can prevent getting booked with customers. I used to be a consultant, and I've missed conferences that couldn't tell their dates until late, because telling my then boss to keep my schedule clear for an entire month, just so I could do a two-or-three day conference isn't very sustainable.
