One possibility is that perl 5.6 contains a bug that "worked" with the versions of Windows that were around 10 years ago, but not with newer versions.

That bug was probably discovered and corrected in later versions of Perl.

Your only solution is to upgrade the version of Perl you use.

Noone is going to help you track down, much less correct, a bug in such an old version of Perl.
