in thread A Word Game (Update 3)

"since "j" is a variant of "i", I wouldn't be surprised if it was occasionally used as a vowel"

The word "fjord" springs to mind. I expect there are others.

Apparently it's still occasionally written "fiord" in New Zealand.

At least autocorrection accepted° this without complaining.

°) hm ... wrote this on my mobile

On my desktop FF is now complaining about, fiord while chrome isn't.

All say that an "English (US)" dictionary is used.

        On a funny side note:

Wordle has "fjord" as one of the solutions and "fiord" as one of the allowed guesses listed in the source ...

... and we all agree that this game is the authoritative source for the English language ... ;-)

    I'd call that a consonant.

I've only ever heard that pronounced as FEE-ord; including by Slartibartfast.

That's bizarre. Maybe it's because Australian English is much closer to British English than American English. I can tell you, essentially no native speaker of American English pronounces it FEE-ord.
