Hi monks,
Last Friday 26/10 I couldn't connect to perlmonks.<r> Why? perlmonks changed its IP.

I edited my host archive to resolve perlmonks.org to its new ip 63.150.14.148

I know other monks in Spain (like Anarion for example) in the same situation.
Did you notice the change?
When was done the change?
Was the TTL updated a couple of days before de change?

Hopes

    Hi Hopes (no pun intended),

I'm in Portugal and had the same problem. My dns server at work and my dns server for my home cable machine had the same problem. I couln't acess www.perlmonks.org, since it resolved to a bad ip address.

As I was starting to sweat from PM deprivation, I used this list of web traceroutes to find the new PM IP. I did noticed that the only other DNS servers with problems where in Australia, but I only checked a few, so there could be more.

I spent some time in the chatterbox and it apeared that other monks where having the same problem.

The conclusion arrived was that the IP changed, but the TTL had not been decreased, as my DNS server still had 10 hours until renewing the IP from perlmonks.org

    It is Monday.

This is the first day I have been able to connect here in days.

Given that I don't have access to IRC, the usual advice I got from chatter about going to some IRC channel to find out about issues didn't and can't work for me. I can only wonder how many other people are in a similar situation to me.

I did, based on past comments, go looking on JavaJunkies, but nobody was logged in and there seemed to be no posts about the PerlMonks situation. I didn't want to bother with creating an account, so I left again.

So yes, you could say that I noticed...

Eh... you probably have a very good reason for this, but I'm going to ask anyway. Why are you bothering with entering IP addresses manually instead of going with dynamic DNS resolution?

    Cheers,

      Hi,

Well - I donīt dig into IPs, but I had www.perlmonks.com as a bookmark and I wasnīt until TODAY able to connect to it (in the Czech Republic) until someone from the P:RD mailinglist told me, that ORG was up.

Now imagine, that I really wasnīt able to visit one of my most favourite websites for nearly a week. And I hadnīt any other information how to reach vroom or anybody else.

I think it should be viable that monks who wish so, could save a (otherwise not visible) email, and the everything machinery would inform these emails if serious things were going on.

What we have now is a one way. What do you think?

      Ciao

Since last week (Friday also I think) I haven't been able to connect to www.perlmonks.com

www.perlmonks.org works OK for me though. If this was an official change of URL I've missed the notice...

    Cheerio!

Australia still has the .com DNS problem. It occurred on Friday Night our time. .org was also not resolving correctly but that was fixed within 24 hours.

And I still can't get to perlmonks.com from New Jersey in the USA. Fortunately, there's perlmonks.org until the DNS gets straightened out...

For the record (in more than one sense) it is Tuesday and this is the first day that I've been (intermittantly) able to get on perlmonks.org.

I'm in Oregon, USA and I had to start up a local nameserver, bypassing my ISP, to get access. Not the first time it happened, either...

It seems very odd to change IPs without having a reasonable period of overlap where both IPs work. I've always tried for at least a week of overlap.

The IP change was surely motivated by a hardware failure. It is hard to plan for your hardware failures one week in advance.

Granted, there are better ways to deal with a hardware failure than updating DNS. But I assume that the pool of machines that PerlMonks gets shuttled between from time to time is being used for a lot of things other than PerlMonks so changing a machine's IP address isn't an easy thing to do.

But I find it hard to be overly critical of a service that manages to be so darn helpful and fun at such a bargain price.

What sort of hardware failure ties up an IP?
