Most monks don't bother editing the titles of their reply nodes. This isn't necessarily a horrible sin (or even a bad thing), but it does lead to nodes with titles of the form "Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: foo". All the "Re:"s distract from and dominate the subject, which sucks.

How about an option to collapse chains of "Re:"s into one, with a bracketed number to show the depth of that particular reply? The code doesn't have to be particularly intelligent: it could simply avoid messing with any title not of the form /(Re: )+original_title/, for instance. It's not a big thing, but judging by the number of monks who hand-hack their reply titles to do this, it might make a lot of people happy.

    I think this would make for a good default, which could itself be hand-hacked if the poster of the node feels it necessary. OTOH, it's a social problem, and you're suggesting a technical solution. It's feasible to do what you want. It may be a good idea.

    I'd have to mull over the possibilities. Sometimes it's better to see who takes the extra time to do the little things. In this case, though, the solution would probably help much more than hinder after a quick second glance at your suggesstion.

    Sorry, I should make myself more clear: the actual title of the reply node wouldn't change. But when the title gets displayed to someone with the "Collapse Re: chains" option set, it would be altered to suit.

    Alternately, this option could automagically collapse Re: chains in your own titles, doing what many of us do by hand for us.
