Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi, I'm wondering if there's an easy way to create dial-up networking connection settings on Windows 95B through XP using Perl.

I'd like to write a program that will automate the creation of DUN entries on win32 systems, and not actually do any dialing of its own (eventually reading the users' individual config from a text file). The point of this exercise is that the DUN settings are slightly different to set up on the different versions of Windows, so if it can be standardized with one interface, it can potentially make supporting dial-up users that much easier. That, and no budget for any commercial apps to do this :(

I found some references to Win32::RASE, however the last reference dates back to 2000 and only mentions up to NT 4. Also, the web site mentioned as its home page seems to be inaccessible.

All suggestions appreciated.

This is a nice idea but it sounds to me like you are trying to support end-users by offering them an application that will automate setting up dialup networking

I think the easiest way to do this is to use the Internet Explorer Administration Kit

many, many years ago when I was in operations at a large ISP, we tried to roll out our own DUN setup disk written in C that edited the registry entries to setup DUN...it was kludgy and a moving target when Microsoft made changes....so I would highly recommend you just use their setup which in this case meets your freebie need.

Yeah, that's pretty much the case - I'm taking over help-desk support from another couple of guys in a different location. They gave up on the "install disk" idea a few years back, mostly because of distribution issues.

Having watched them in action for the last month or so, and having taken many support calls, I've realized much of their residential user base are little old ladies or men (it's a small regional ISP). They just want to be able to email their grandkids, but most can't figure out what "double-click" means.

So, I'm looking at ways to make this easy for everyone involved (less support headaches and the users don't get as frustrated with the "click here then here" routine)...

Thanks for the suggestion, much appreciated.
