i have to wonder if i'm the only one who does this...i have custom icons for all my different languages of source files.

like i have a custom icon for all my plain old perl scripts (.pl, .cgi), a different one for my gui perl scripts (.gpl), and even some for my javascripts (.js) and c/c++ source files (.c, .cpp).

now, with graphic design not being my strong suit, my "custom" icons, well...suck. but nonetheless, i'm something of a customization nut, and i was wondering if anyone else was. got any clever icons for your perl scripts? wanna show em off?

besides, i could use some new icons, anyone know a good place to find such a thing? yep, boredom is a dangerous thing :P

None of my own, but when boredom strikes or I'm looking for ways to procrastinate, I usually install a set by Matt Kruse.

Yeah I have done, and do something like this. I have an icon library created using axialis icons for perl. I stole the activestate perl icons and changed their color (and other tings actually :-). Dark blue is perl modules. Yellow is scripts (the default), and I have couple of others for extensions that probably wouldn't make sense outside of my context. Ive been meaning to post a script to install them, and now that I see matt kruses work I may use them and do so. :-)

Ummm... So are you using Windows and Active Perl?

Personally I never bothered to use custom icons, I think icons are rather distracting, and I always view my files in detailed view.

If you are looking for a program to create custom icons, try the Axialis Icon Workshop (I think this is one of the best commercial product). Or other free alternatives (search with google).

One thought, have you turned off the Hide Extension for Known File Type option in your Explorer?

Custom icons for scripts? What are you talking about? I guess you are assuming some kind of context, but you aren't mentioning it.

I recognize Perl programs because they start with

    #!/usr/bin/perl
Funny enough, my kernel has the same ideas.

You mean you actually have to look inside your files to know if they are perl scripts or not? WoW, coool! :)

If I understand your problem, I can solve it! Of course, the same can be said for you.

The AM is probably referring to icons displayed by a GUI in a graphical file system browser.

My vote goes to your strategy as well.

I once had an icon that looked like this:

    --dB--

But my Perl programmer friends made me remove it ;-)

I've always left the icons alone as regards file types. However, for icons on my desktop (win) or for links on the start bar, I make my own using Microangelo. Quite a fun lil program. In fact, I made one for my perlmonks.com link... a "p" with a little halo.
