A few weeks ago, in this thread, somebody proposed a change to Best Nodes to include the best nodes of the year.

Since nobody has written a follow up on that case, I'll try to build a case for it.

Following that input, several monks proposed something slightly different, but the general feeling is that the Monastery would like to have more of those nodes available.

This is not really about reputation or pride.

Ordinary monks like myself would like to have the nodes above average to be preserved in a place where they can be easily found. I know that node reputation doesn't have an absolute value, but it would be a good indication that one node was positively accepted by many people.

Currently, the Monastery is preserving two types of exceptional nodes: Tutorials and Best Nodes. Tutorials are selected through the consideration system. Best Nodes are kept in a permanent exposition, thus allowing them to gather extended reputation day after day. As a result, those nodes that are "best" today have a good chance of staying "best" forever.

I like tilly's proposal about having a Hall of Fame for the best node of each year, month, and week. This device would be valuable for those people who can't browse PM on a daily basis, and would like an alternative view to find the good stuff. But also the regulars would benefit from it, because the good nodes would be grouped in a specific place.

To avoid concern about disclosure of the node reputation before voting on them, I also propose that nodes in the Hall of Fame shloud be shown without the current rep. The purpose is to make those nodes available, not to encourage competition.

I hope I have stirred the interest of the powerful ones.

    I've allready stated in my reply to tilly proposal that I don't believe anymore in everaging methods for filtering the best nodes. Instead I believe in more Social Networking methods that let everyone adjust the reputation computing function to his own needs.

    Unfortunately knowing the PerlMonks inertia I don't think any such mechanisms can be developed inside the PM web site soon. But this does not mean it's not possible at all, because you don't need to have all the data from the PM database to run your Best Nodes list. I have just started to code an engine for collaborative bookmark management - I don't have time for anything really sophisticated, but it should at least be a proof of concept. If there is any interest in my work I'll post an update soon.

    I do not feel that the Best Nodes page is the place to find "good" information. A better place (hopefully) would be Tutorials or even Reviews, and the Power-Monks use Super Search to find what they are after. When i am looking for an answer, i don't first search for "good" nodes. I first search for a topic, and since i have my preferences set to sort node replies by best reputation, i have my 'Best Nodes'. And if i want to see what a particular monk's best nodes are, i can find that out as well.

    Nay, the Best Nodes page is about pride. And if you want to make it on that coveted Top 20 list, you'd better get about a quarter K of users to ++ your node. Or else you only last for about a day or so. ;)

    Oh, and if you write something you are proud of, don't be ashamed to remind everyone on your home node.

      It's not just about pride. I personally consider browsing perlmonks my best time waster ... on days when I have a lot of time to waste, after exhausting the Newest Nodes page, i allways take a glane down the "Weekly Best" nodelet to see if there's anything i've missed that other people have (aparently) given high marks. If there was a Monthly/Yearly best, i'd gander at those too if i had even more time.

      You're right .. searchingthe "Best Nodes" as a section would probably be silly .. but as a list. Sounds like a usefull page to me.

      I can only partially agree.

      I am a casual browser here in PM, and I don't stand a chance that one of my nodes gets to the Hall of Fame, but sometimes, after I have been away from the Moastery for a while, I would like to know what was going on while I wasn't watching, and reading ALL the nodes submitted, say, in one month, is not something I can do. I believe that this was the gist of tilly's note as well.

      I have learned a lot from the Monastery, even without contributing too much. I would like to have a method to skim the good stuff from the average nodes, and a hall of fame with the best nodes for each month would be a great browsing help for somebody who is not looking for a specific subject, but is only willing to learn more from other people experience.

      A Hall of Fame page would be a system to keep the good nodes in a place where people can see them (without an explicit research) even after one week.

      I believe that the Monastery is full of hidden treasures, nodes that were not Tutorials but did not get a quarter of K votes, and nonetheless deserve more than one week of glory.

    I only use the Daily Best, Weekly Best and All-Time Best nodelets. I would definitely like Monthly Best and Annual Best nodelets mixed in there.

    I can't see how this would be difficult, only needs to be refreshed by the system daily or weekly, and users can turn them on or off as they choose.

    The thing is, being on the Best Nodes list tends to be pretty self-feeding. That is, someone browses the best nodes and says "Wow, that was really cool! ++". Camel code is a truly incredible piece of work, but if it hadn't landed on Best Nodes, it would have faded into the background again as far as lots of extra votes are concerned.

    Yet, it would be great to be able to find the true gems easily, and Best Nodes is the forum for that...

    Maybe this is getting too complicated, but what if upvotes have less "value" as the score of a node starts to go through the roof? For instance upon reaching a Reputation of 50, an upvote might only have a 75% chance of increasing reputation. At 100, that drops to 50%, at 150 to 25%, at 200 to 20%, at 250 to 15%, at 300 to 10%. (Those are completely off the top of my head, of course.) The point is, then exposing the recent good nodes to more viewing in Best Nodes will contribute less to score inflation. Or maybe reputation inflation is not something to worry about...

    I wouldn't mind seeing "Best Nodes of the Month" or "of the Year", or even a list of the "Best Node of the Month" for the past 12 months. But I don't mind the way the system is now, either.

    Seems a lot of peoples desires here could be met by adding a reputation feature to Super Search. I can predict that some would find this distateful as we know that many of the best nodes dont have that high a rep. But it could also be useful.

    Something for pmdev to think about I guess.

    What if instead use XP as soul basis for entry into the Hall of Fame we could have other factors controlling entry into the Hall of Fame. Like I think paco should be in the Hall of Fame and maybe there should be a Hall of Flame for more infamous nodes.
