You know, I absolutely agree. I really think that fbrils fisss pqoeiwux xxxxx.....
Pardon me. My English crashed. I'm back, it's okay now.
Anyway, yes, your suggestion is actually... hang on... somebody's trying to get into my English. I should be able to... Ya liubio po-russki!! Chto ti delal c Angliski yazik? Ne sse v veder!
Petruchio peeks out from behind the curtain. Have they stopped throwing things yet?
Ok, seriously, Perl runs on Windows, and much as I like Unix, it'd be a very bad thing if people here got down on Windows folks (friendly, humorous rivalry is another matter). Happily, I don't see that happening much. I think "Primary O/S" would be a fine thing; besides the mentioned benefit, it would add color and make good fodder for statisticians. $OzzyOsbourne++; | [reply] |

(tongue firmly in cheek)
Before merlyn beats me to pointing to CPAN, you know if you used the Know::English module instead of reinventing the wheel it would be much more stable, people would adore you, your car would never need gas, and you could make a living winning spelling bees.

How about this? We already have the location tag in the homenode. I'll add support for O/S, and list them on the stats page.
Add this HTML comment to your home node text. You can put in anywhere, except inside another HTML comment
<~-- os:TRSDOS,CP/M,NT,linux -->
Only the first 20 characters will be used in the tag, so list your OS's in descending order of experience or preference (favorite first). No checking for validity will be done. Tags will be picked up at 3:30AM EST, along with the location tags. Where the location tags required the checking of the significant update, the new scanner looks at everyone who logged in the preceeding 25 hours (yes, 25), so don't bother with the significant update box.
I'll add the display in the next day or two on the stats pages.

How about adding support for Geek Code?
If we tag it like:
<!--
-----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK-----
Version: 3.1
GED/J d-- s:++>: a-- C++(++++) ULU++ P+ L++ E---- W+(-) N+++ o+
K+++ w--- O- M+ V-- PS++>$ PE++>$ Y++ PGP++ t- 5+++ X++ R+++>$
tv+ b+ DI+++ D+++ G+++++ e++ h r-- y++**
------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------
-->
you can make all kinds of (un)interesting statistics out of that, including OS preferences...

well, for one thing...
<!-- GSS/CS ... V-->--- -->
where's the end of the comment going to be? (I'm not quite
familiar enough with HTML to tell you offhand for sure.)
Update: Turns out that the above code will print the
last --- -->on the screen because it's already
got the end of the comment tag (-->)... at
least, that's what it thinks.
I think it would be kinda cool to have Geekcodes on the
Stats Page, it's just the implementation. jcwren, if you
decide to do this, couldn't we just include the codes (and
have em separated by the ----BEGIN GEEK CODE---- or
however they begin, and then you can check em out in both
places.

Hi, just two things - It should be:
<!-- os:TRSDOS,CP/M,NT,linux -->
Also are these the only options we have?
I have updated my homenode. This is fun!

The whole issue of being an NT person is part of the greater 'holy war' of the OSes..
Thankfully, everyone I've seen on here so far subscribes to the "What is, is.." philosophy. NT is there, and it's a tool, in the same way that Perl is a tool
It seems to be perceived as not 'which is the best', for various flavours of 'best' such as philosophical, ethical, performance etc., but 'what can we make it do?'..
The Monastery often reminds me of a project I once saw, where a couple of guys put a huge engine in the back of a compact car, giving it the performance of one of the supercars.. You give a Monk any OS, and they'll make it do wonders, with the right programming tools.
Your post begs the question, "Do you really need to know who the NT gurus are"?
The advantage of this forum is that you post a question. Maybe OS specific, maybe not.
If it is OS specific, then, only the people that know the solutions will get round to spending the time to give you a solution, as the rest will be pondering some other problem that is more apt to their skills and knowledge.
I don't know how many others I speak for, but I'm pretty much OS neutral. I've worked on a variety of systems, and feel pretty comfy with them (apart from VMS, which I considered my time using similar to being beaten to insensibility with a feather duster).
Still, if people like it, go for it... :)

Actually I think that for the most part anyone that is using NT here is doing so because that is a standard at the office. But I do see your point people here try to make the best of their situation by using PERL on any OS that their employers give them.

"I know English. I have nothing against other languages, but I was born American and that's what I know."
Cough. <Running and Ducking>That is debatable.</Running and Ducking>
Friendly cross atlantic ragging aside; all languages,
operating systems, programming paradigms and editors
are just tools. You use the right tool for the job.
People discovered that thousands of years ago. I don't
see where the confusion lies.
Also, diversity is the best and probably the only defence
against a future where change is the only constant. I would
hold this to be a fairly universal truth, not only applying
to computing. For example, there is currently a dearth of
genetic diversity. We are living in the period of time that
has more species becoming extinct than at any other time in
history.

OzzyOsbourne don't bite my head off :-) but I don't really see the need. I'm one of the many forced to use NT (though only as a unreliable dumb terminal) and like many I find it hard not to have sarcastic swipes at it but NT questions do get answered such as this one. If you don't like adverse Windoze comments then just -- them (he said inviting trouble :-)
