I've read that when you vote on a thread it's Anonymous.

Is that really true or is my up/down vote stored in a DB somewhere? Can the "gods" see who down voted them?

The gods can indeed see all votes. This is to make it possible to investigate malicious, predatory downvoting. I don't speak for the other gods, but I can only think of a couple of times when I have used it.

I think I've queried the table once or twice in the time I've been a god, and that was to see what it looked like, not to look at any particular record.

It wouldn't be too difficult for the Gods to know who voted in what way. Whether they do so, whether they keep a log of it and whether they bother is a whole other issue. As there is no reliable way of knowing that (other than trusting the word of a god), I see little merit in knowing.

Check Recently Active Threads... It'll show you how you voted on any node you cast a vote.

So, the answer is - yes and no. No one knows how you voted on their node, but the votes you cast are recorded for all time.

I just try to vote my conscience, and if I'm wrong and called on it I'll either defend it or apologize. A lot like real life, huh?

It's clear, by the way, that all of your votes must saved in a DB, simply because any node you've voted (up or down) is always displayed afterwards with its total score, rather than the voting radiobuttons.
Not necessarily. The database could be designed to record that you voted for a particular node without recording what your vote was (except for the effect in the aggregate score for the node). But that was not the case here. :-)

Yes it could. But then we wouldn't be able to detect people misusing the voting system. We keep this data to prevent others from abusing, not to abuse it ourselves. Also I think its kind nice you can tell how you voted on a node from the RAT. Of course, I would say this, as it was my idea anyway, but you know what I mean. :-)

This particular vote is not anonymous. I downvoted this node. WAY TOO MANY threads on the voting system lately.

If you have votes, use them as you feel like it. If you got votes, ignore them if they make you feel bad and smile if they make you feel good. If you think something's unfair, you're probably right but also probably wrong. And stop asking about the system.

Can the "gods" see who down voted them?

If you treat your privilege to vote in such a way that you assume that someone is watching you then your voting habits will never be such that the "gods" care. IMHO one of the really bad things about "The Internet®" in general is the whole anonymity thing and how it makes people act towards other netiznes.

Sure they can, or else they wouldn't be called *gods*...

Remember, somebody must have access to the machine, PM is not over SSL, so there is no need to have access to the database to know the votes, just to the network traffic (considering your paranoid).

Or even monitoring the reputation of the node against the access of people to the vote button... (still considering your paranoid)

But... There is a database with the votes that nobody cares looking at it (except for exceptions). (now supposing you're a sane person)...
