So it seemed that "Perl doesn't get to compete.".

After some people (myself included) emailed the organizers, here's (part of) the response:

Dear Folks,

thank you all for patiently (or, in some cases, not-so-patiently) educating me about the state of Perl as a web development language.

As a result, my misjudgment is now corrected, Perl teams will be admitted into Plat_Forms, and the website has been updated accordingly: http://www.plat-forms.org/ http://www.plat-forms.org/faq.htm

See, it wasn't a matter of "We don't like Perl", as Lutz explains further in his email, but rather an honest assumption that Perl wasn't good enough nor used in enough places.

I'd also like to say that Lutz seems to be a very nice person and I don't even want to imagine the kind of feedback he must have gotten from part of our community O:-)

Anyway, problem solved and Perl now gets to compete. Yay :-)

Well, not quite. All us rabble rousers did was grant perl the ability to compete, but that still depends upon there being a local to Nurnburg team to do the actual competing. His response goes on:

Now the only question is: Will enough Perl teams actually apply for the contest?

I'd be very happy if you would follow-up the prodding for protest that some have sent over various Perl mailing lists with prodding for participation now...

Me? I'm in Chicago, so I'm right out. It sure would be keen if there's a German contingent out there that would actually float something to compete in this whatsamajigger. It'd be a shame if it turned into some sort of global perl outcry of "We're here! Pay attention to us!" and then nobody showed up for the actual competition.

Well, we have a map of Germany on the wall of our lunch room, and a quick measurement shows that it's not too far from Frankfurt, where demerphq and Corion are located .. about 200km, in fact.

      I'm sure they'd be up for a challenge. :)

Instead of dumping the load on demerphq and Corion, wouldn't this be the ideal time to use Perlmonks as a place for a collaborative effort, and maybe just ask them to be the local presenters? It has often been suggested that Perlmonks create a new "Projects" section where anyone can contribute ideas (and code fragments) to a project.

I'm not really a human, but I play one on earth. Cogito ergo sum a bum
Well, at least there's one less page on the web saying Perl is not good enough.

      1 down, 999 to go, but hey, it's a start :-)

OK, now is beginning of November, do you know if the Perl community will be able to submit at least 3 teams for the plat_forms contest ? If not, this would be a very bad signal to the world about Perl development.

Personnally I am currently working within my organisation (Etat de Genève) to convince the management to allocate resources for sending a team to the contest. We have a major internal project on Catalyst and a good (brand new) team, so the contest is an interesting challenge and incentive for us, and I guess the management will be OK.

But this will only work if there are fellow Perl teams in the contest. Any other Catalysters ? or some Perl mongers from other frameworks (Jifty, CGI::Application, whatever) ? Any other places where the Perl community discusses about this ?

    Best regards, L. Dami

Not quite... it just means everybody doing Perl is pretty busy with their jobs, which means the market is great O:-)

OK, there are no Cobol teams either, I guess they are pretty busy too, and for sure the market is great for Cobol !

hi cog, can you share with us what you said to the organizers?
