Hello,

Seeking for Perl wisdom recently I've posted this:
Subj: web component libraries Greetings. Is there a chance to get the subj for mod_perl? Things like calendar, +grid, etc? Thanx, Artem.
All got though was -4 to my reputation. And one wierd answer. Since English is not my native I assume some problems with the phrase itself. Otherwise, the topic is ..er.. tabu?
Anyway, I'm still missing the reason of such a negative reaction and would appriciate any explanation. Since it'll probably help me not to offend/irritate people in future.

Mant thanx,
Artem.

I didn't vote on your post, but I remember reading it several times wondering what you were talking about. I've only just realised.

The tendency (in my opinion) here is, if you don't put any effort into explaining your post properly, then you are wasting my time, and you get voted down.

The subject was fine, but you could have said something like:

I am looking for web component libraries that work under mod_perl. Things like calendars, grids etc.
Small change, but easier to understand.

    Hi artemave,

I just looked at the post in question. At time of writing it has "Reputation: -4 (+13 -17)" meaning that 17 people saw fit to down vote it while 13 up voted it.

I suggest you read The Role of XP in PerlMonks and Voting/Experience System if you have not already done so. Since you can't pay for things with XP why worry about it? Your post is not trollish in anyway, the only reason I can think of why people may have down voted it would be that they do not understand what you mean.

I know that English is not your native tongue, I think that the majority of users here do have English as their first language. Perhaps people feel you could have phrased your question better. I am not sure. I do not believe the subject is taboo.

    Hi artem,

Sorry you've had such a negative experience of the Monastery so far! People are generally pretty helpful here...

Anyway, when I read your post above, I didn't understand your question - 'the subj' didn't make sense.

After reading clinton's reply and allowing few seconds for my brain to tick ;) I found it suddenly obvious that you meant 'Where can I get the things I've mentioned in my subject line for mod_perl?' but it took me a little time to twig. Possibly my brain is running under-clocked today, but I suspect that's your problem.

    HTH!

    Best wishes, andye

Well ... sorry to be an asshat, but I downvoted the original question, this OP, and your followup. The reason - it shows a lack of research on your part. I tend to downvote the 'just gimme solutions' questions that lack any sign of initial research. Google is there for a reason (as is CPAN, sourceforge, freshmeat, ...).

What I suggest is that you post your question more thoroughly in your own language and I am sure someone can translate it into clearer English and post that underneath. I can do it myself with various delays depending on the language (e.g. Dutch, German, Portuguese and French instantly and 6 or 7 others with varying delay).

Also, specify the mod_perl version. 1 and 2 are as radically different as the versions of apache they are intended for, and there are some interoperability.

    Hi, Artem -

Welcome to the Monastery. Sorry you didn't get better replies but I can understand and agree with the other posters who wanted more info and more research on your part. I deal a lot with non-English speakers, and the suggestion I'll offer is that when trying to get a point across in another language it's better to say more rather than less. Don't use shorthand, especially when asking for free advice. ;-D

mod_perl embeds the Perl interpreter in Apache, but unless it's expanded since the last I worked with it (several years ago now), it isn't a plug-in oriented architecture. Apache is, and Apache modules can be written in Perl or C. My company used to make some nifty use of C modules in Apache 1.3, but found that the technique is best limited to very low-level speedups as opposed to application-generators like you mention, unless (for example) calendar generation is a really big part of your web code. The pain of recompiling Apache every time we tweaked something was just too great in relation to the minor speedups we accomplished. Using Apache modules to accelerate database-oriented list operations was great, but embedding entire table display pages was not.

    HTH :D
