in reply to Leftover votes: wild suggestion / feature request(s)

As a serious comment, I see some problems with vote-carry-over. And I conclude that unused votes should carryover, but be SUBTRACTED from your next day's total available. This would encourage using them.

Carry with addition has problems:

1. It encourages laziness in voting. I takes a bit of time and effort to vote on a node, and knowing that your votes will carry over, is one more impetus to be lazy, and vote tommorrow. Which of course, gets delayed again tommorrow.

2. What happens when the carryover total starts reaching huge numbers, for the laziest of monks. When you login you will see "You have 12,334 votes left today. :-) It would tend to make voting seem more worthless, by inflating the votes available. Sort of XP inflation. It would also screw up the vote allowance heirarchy set by monk level. "You mean that that lowly friar has more votes to give than me today?....outrageous!"

3. In order to encourage monks to use all their daily votes, maybe you should DEDUCT unused votes from the monk's next day available votes. Use em or lose em.

I think the original suggestion is only a one-day carryover, so massive numbers of votes shouldn't be an issue.

Re subtracting unused votes: I think voting is encouraged enough at PM. Rewarding voting for voting's sake (or punishing non-voting) can lead to un- or ill-considered voting.

The current reward for the 1st five levels seems appropriate to get new people involved. The random XP for voting after that is probably not enough to cause undue influence.

I'll quote the only part of the original proposal that was rendered in bold typeface:

    just for one day

Oops,Sorry.....I'm a natural "spin doctor", always blowing things out of proportion to suit my position....it's the American way! :-)

But if the topic is to be taken seriously, why limit the carryover to one day? Maybe the carryover should be 2 days over weekends, etc. Or maybe go from login to login; I'm sure there are many monks who login once a week, and look at nodes for the past 5 days.

But I now launch my campaign to subtract carryovers......this encourages logging in and voting( although may encourage frivilous voting).

I think this idea has merit.

This would allow votes to be carried forward from Saturday or Sunday when very occasionally there are insufficient nodes of merit to vote on.

    (additional emphasis by me!)

Indeed! But some days you just don't manage to do it. That's why I proposed this suggestion as a tiny workaround for such unfortunate inconveniences. As for the other problem, it has already been told you that I would limit the carryover to one day, that is, to the double of the available votes for one's level. Of course you may want two, instead, or three, but a limit should be imposed anyway, and as far as I'm concerned one day is by far more than enough.
