Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I do not believe our company allows us to send email through SMTP. I tried to contact the SMTP server using ping smtp.company.com and mail.smtp.company.com. I did find the dc,company.com but the server didnt respond when I ran my perl script. Is outlook the only way I can send it now? Thanks in advance.

    Make it easy on yourself, and ask the IT folks at “our company.”   There are many ways that they could have set things up, many internal domain names they could have used, many authentication and authorization mechanisms, and undoubtedly many firewalls.   If they know what they are doing, they will have adopted the principle that “everything that is not permitted is not possible.”   Yes, Outlook servers can support SMTP, but that certainly does not mean that they will.   If you have a legitimate business need to do something, either you or your manager (at some level) will probably need to make a formal request.

      You could always try to telnet to the mail server on port 25. But as said before, contact your IT team. You run the risk of breaking policy.

        TCP port 25 is more and more reserved for server-to-server communication, clients should use TCP port 587 on "their own" mail server instead. Policies on both ports and often also firewalls are used to enforce this at several providers.
