Is there a way to see a short list -- say, 20 -- of the most recently updated or created tutorials (along with the date of modification)?

Perhaps just a list of the most-recently modified nodes linked to from the Tutorials node?

Thanks. Though, I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean that one should do the following:

      1. Go to the "Super Search" page.
      2. Click the checkbox to only search in the Tutorial section.
      3. Select "Don't include replies".
      4. Hit the "Search" button (note: you haven't put any text to search for in any of the text fields).

      ?

If so, that would show results sorted by creation date (rather than last-modified date), correct?

Yes, although the following will do the first three for you.

That's what I said. Not that there's much if any difference between sorting by creation date and sorting by modification date.

        Still not very user-friendly, though.

Intentionally so. Since searching is very expensive, the devs want to not create a means of launching a search from a link.
