    I never downvote anything

Humble Monks, I just spent half of my “dog votes” today voting-down this entire thread

Ah, yeah, Baby! Logicus! He was the Gene Ray of Perl Monks.

      But back on topic...

What none of you realize is that S-Dial is going for the long con. He'll own this site before it's all over. Mark my words.

Teaching to fish almost always involve demonstrating fishing skills. Often that involves catching a fish. In like fashion, teaching programming almost always involves writing some demonstration code.

Hand someone a fish, they owe you a fish. Teach someone to fish and you lose your fishing monopoly.

Don't forget the usury! They owe you a fish and six minnows.

Cite a case where you taught someone to fish if you would.

But I have never found it particularly helpful when a forum is just “a code-writing service.”   Maybe that is merely a matter of opinion, but either you hand someone a fish or teach him how to fish.   Either way, it seems unnecessarily harsh to me to penalize someone when their response and chosen means of response is not as you would choose to do it.

Maybe it’s just me; just the fact that, no matter what the response to any thread might be, I never downvote anything.   Upvote, yes, frequently.   Downvote, [almost] never.

You're still allowed to post, so you haven't been penalized yet

[The following comment is not directed at the post(er). Just a thought that occurred to me when reading it.]

I've seen people say they rarely, if ever, downvote. With no way to prove that, i wonder if there could be an optional field on a monk's home node for upvote and downvote totals, perhaps similar to ebay's user history, e.g. last month, last year, and ever. Even a rolling average of the past 30 days would be nice to see.

As I've said before, I downvote all thought-police posts and suggestions. I downvote often when these sort of discussions come up. :|

Who said anything about thought-police? This could be a way to optionally provide backup for one's own claim. That is, a monk who already stated he does not downvote, can even back up that claim, optionally, and temporarily.

This implies, and even encourages the view, that downvotes are bad, and therefore people who use them are bad.

That's not a view that should be encouraged.

What are you talking about? It does exactly the opposite. It gives users the ability to backup a claim that they don't downvote. Ostensibly, because they think it's bad.

I just think that could be fun info to know for voters -- like XP Nodelet tell you about how many votes you have left, it could tell you how you've spent your votes today, this month, to date

On your home node, the "Your votes" links shows your votes.
