Update on Good Habits

on Oct 28, 2001 at 08:59 UTC ( [id://121798]=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Last Week, John M. Dlugosz posted this node about merchandise ideas.

In it, Hubris Boy talked about habits. Well, I dropped a note to the company linked to, and they replied. Trouble was, this was only after the node had disappeared from immediate view for most people.

So I thought I'd post their reply here and ask the following:

  • who is prepared to fork out some cash for a habit, and what's your budget?
  • what do you think should be embroidered?
I'm happy to liaise with Dina on this if I can just get some feedback from people as to what the demand really is (if any).
Dear Perl Monks,

One of your members wrote to tell me that our monk's habits had been
mentioned as an addition to the Monastery Gift Shop. The original
mention had mused about embroidered logos and quantity discounts.

We would be happy to discuss adding embroidered patches to our robes
for you as well as a discount for a larger order. I would also suggest
that we could make robes for you in fleece, which is
machine washable and very, very cuddly ;) As for a logo - the image
I get is of a pearl perched on an open book with an outline of a hood
around both items. Or not - just an idea.

My suggestion is something simple, such as

perlmonks.com
on the back near the top in the middle, and:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
use strict;
on the front, both in courier with text about 1/2 inch high

thoughts please...

ps - don't take her logo idea the wrong way - i think she has very little idea what we're about :)

    FWIW, I'd beg for all/mostly natural fibers. 100% plastics (polyester, etc) make my fingers itch and feel gruesome against my skin (especially plastic fleece).

    I'd also be curious what their idea of 'large' is, rather than our idea. They may mean a run of over a hundred.

    Update: Looking at the site, much of it is "Ren Faire"1 style items. So, I'd really like to see a picture of this monk's habit before I'd shell out for one. On the other hand, the monk's habit is listed as being 100% wool... yay historical accuracy!

    1 Can you tell I play in the SCA? Not as anal as the Civil War folks, but more so than the Ren Faire folks.

    I am somewhat interested. However, the only immediately available monks robe is $200. Even though this isn't exactly what we're taking about, it does give a ball-park figure... Anyway, I'd have a hard time justifying anything over $100 for something like this.

    This sounds like a cool idea to me.

    To be honest I've been looking for a decent robe-type-item-of-apparel for some time and if I could get one branded in the "craft" of perl, then I'd be jumping the queue to get one!

    The logo issue is a tricky one... and I'm sure we'll get a lot of suggestions. Personally I'd definitely go for the

    #!/usr/bin/perl -w use strict;
    on there somewhere - possibly in smallish type on the front upper left (normal logo position).

    The back is more difficult, although the line of t-shirts on www.thinkgeek.com offer a variety of ideas.

    We want something cool... but clever... just like us brother monks ;-)

    Fleece is a nice idea, for those evenings huddled in front of the screen wrestling with the mysteries of some arcane .pm module, coffee in one hand, robe wrapped around you with the other (or is it just me? Thinking back to my freezing-accomadation-student-days).
    Might get a bit hot in the Summer though.... How's about a Summer robe and a Winter robe line?

    I'd better stop this ramble now... the possibilities are fairly wide... but to the idea -

    Definitely.

    (Where can I pre-order for Christmas? ;-))
