You'll need to do some overloading.
package DualVar;
use overload (
'""' => sub { $_[0][0] },
'0+' => sub { $_[0][1] },
fallback => 1,
);
sub new { bless [ @_[1,2] ], $_[0] }
1;
And that's all!
use DualVar;
my $x = DualVar->new("japhy", 19);
printf "I'm %s, and I'm %d years old.\n", $x, $x;

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
