mzedeler has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi fellow perl users.

I am currently working in a Windows environment using Activestate perl 5.10.0. I've been using srvany from Microsoft, but would like more fine grained control using Win32::daemon, but it seems that the module is dead. I can't get it from CPAN or Activestate any longer, and the author (Dave Roth) only has a very old version on his home page.

Does anyone out there know what the status of this module is? (I tried Dave, but got no response.)

In Windows, a daemon is called a service. The ActiveState program that can make this is called PerlSvc. One link: (other PDK versions are available - this isn't the latest)
    http://docs.activestate.com/pdk/7.3/PerlSvc_overview.html
Of course the disadvantage of this is that you have to buy it from ActiveState.

Thanks for the hints. I have been looking at Activestates offering and found in comparison that Win32::Daemon looks promising. For this reason, I want to know what is happening to that particular module.

I'd be curious to know what you find out re: ActiveState vs Win32::Daemon. None of my Windows programs require a daemon, but you never know....
